Police in Rhyl yesterday warned women not to walk on their own late at night after two terrifying attacks.

The victims in both cases were lone women and the assaults are believed to be linked.

The first happened in the early hours of April 4, when a 25-year-old was confronted by a teenager in the Matalan car park and pushed to the Brass Rings ground.

A SPATE of drive-by bag snatches has sparked a warning for women from police.

Raiders driving a white Austin Metro struck three more times after trying to steal bags from two women on Thursday.

And yesterday three more women were targeted in similar thefts across Halifax.

Calderdale Police intelligence coordinator, Inspector Mark McManus said: "This type of offence is on the increase.

"Suspects are targeting lone females walking on pavements or grass verges and residential areas."

An 82-year-old woman's shopping bag was snatched on a grass verge in Myrtle Drive, Illingworth, Halifax, at 3.20 pm on Friday. The victim described the thieves as a black man with a bald head and a white man with a goatee beard, black baseball cap and jacket.

At 4.30 pm on Friday a white Metro screeched to a stop in front of a 71-year-old woman in Moorfield Street, Savile Park, Halifax.

A woman jumped out of the car, ran toward her and grabbed her handbag, before climbing back into the vehicle and escaping.

The raider was a slim white teenager, 5ft 4ins, wearing a dark baseball cap, dark jacket and trousers. The driver was a white teenage man with short hair.

A 57-year-old woman was the next victim at 4.51 pm in the Tesco supermarket car park, King Cross, Halifax.

The woman was taking her trolley back when a white vehicle stopped to let her cross. It then sped alongside her and the driver snatched her handbag from her shoulder and sped off.

The raiders were described as two thin Asian men, both with pointed noses, wearing baseball caps. One wore a cream puffer jacket.

Inspector McManus said the raids were thought to be linked, as well as two on Thursday in the RSPCA car park, Wade Street, Halifax, and the Somerfield supermarket car park, Chanel Flap Bags Huddersfield Road, Elland.

It hardly struck me, as I set out for a couple of days in Somerset, that they would lead me to Bridport in Dorset, thence to Dame Margaret Drabble, to the history of the jigsaw puzzle, and finally to some melancholy reflections on the meaning of life. We'd seen a day of hurricane-force gales along the south coast last Saturday, when our Somerset hosts remarked that they'd bought tickets for a talk by Margaret Drabble at the Bridport Literary Festival early that evening, and were planning to drive over to the town before supper - and would anyone care to come? Gales notwithstanding, Margaret Drabble was there on time, in a scarlet silk tunic and red shoes. The sweet little 18thcentury chapel, now a theatre, was packed for the talk.

Someone had asked Dame Margaret if she had any tips for jigsaw puzzlers. Yes, she replied, like most people she started at the edges. The component pieces are easy to narrow down, having at least one straight edge; and in this way you can make a frame for your picture, and work inwards. . .

But by now my thoughts were racing. The beauty of a jigsaw puzzle as a challenge is that it is a kind of contained chaos: a jumble, yes, but a jumble we approach secured by three fixed anchors in our task. Though the puzzle-solver may appear to be confronted with a sprawling heap of apparently unrelated little coloured shapes, he knows (1) that they are finite in number and do add up to a single block with defined edges and no blanks; (2) that the block makes a recognisable picture; and (3) that this picture will be identical to the one on the front of the box containing the pieces. His options, in short, are helpfully confined within a template for the reconstruction of which he knows he has all he needs.
